Family in a Time of Technology

Glowing screens entrance us wherever we are. From smart phones to tablets to laptops to maximum-strength HD TVs--young and old alike are mesmerized by our enticing "easy everywhere" culture. Promising the Nirvana of connectivity, ear buds and touch pads actually detach us from those who are bodily in the same room or at the same table with us.

What's a family to do? Andy Crouch to the rescue.

Crouch, Tech Wise Family.jpgauthor of Culture Making, offers brief but fascinating analysis of why and how the culture and our brains have traveled down this path. With this he mixes in memorable rubrics to guide us down a new road. Some of his helpful aphorisms include:

  • We want to create more than we consume.
  • We wake up before our devices do and they "go to bed" before we do.
  • Car time is conversation time.

These and seven others are presented in The Tech-Wise Family with realism and without legalism. Every family is different and sometimes circumstances overtake our best intentions. But forming healthy habits like these can make exceptions truly exceptional.

Wise and winsome, insightful and inspiring, Crouch's book is, yes, what every family with children needs--and most of the rest of us too.

Get to Know IVP

book cover"Some publishers tell you what to believe. Other publishers tell you what you already believe. But InterVarsity Press helps you believe," says J. I. Packer. Andy Le Peau and Linda Doll describe how this came to be a hallmark of InterVarsity Press in Heart. Soul. Mind. Strength, an anecdotal history spanning the sixty years from the founding of IVP in 1947 to the present day.
